Makabayan Warns Senate Leadership Change Masks Systemic Rot

The Makabayan bloc warned that the resignation of Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano and the election of Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian as his successor do not resolve the “deeper rot” of corruption in the Senate and the Marcos administration.

“Ang pagbabago ng pamuno sa Senado ay hindi solusyon sa krisis ng korupsyon ng institusyon,” the group said, stressing that factional rivalries merely reshuffle power among camps already tainted by scandals.

Makabayan cited the flood control scam as proof of systemic plunder across political lines.

“Hindi dapat may selective sa usapin ng hustisya. Lahat ng nakipagsabwatan sa pagnanakaw ng pera ng bayan ay dapat humarap sa hukuman,” it declared, insisting accountability must reach all implicated officials, whether allied with Marcos or Duterte.

The bloc cautioned that the impeachment trial of the Vice President must not become “political theater” shielding allies while sacrificing expendable figures.

“Ang tunay na pagbabago ay hindi sa pagpalit ng lider, kundi sa pagpalit ng sistema na nagbibigay-daan sa korupsyon,” Makabayan emphasized, vowing continued public vigilance until genuine reforms and transparent investigations are pursued. # (ZIA LUNA)
