The Senate is poised to confront a politically sensitive investigation after Sen. Erwin Tulfo revealed that the Blue Ribbon Committee may scrutinize alleged irregularities in ₱6‑billion worth of flood control projects in Taguig City — a probe urged by former mayor Lino Cayetano, younger brother of Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano.
In a DZBB interview on Sunday, July 19, Tulfo said Lino has expressed willingness to testify and is calling for a formal inquiry into projects spanning 2022 to 2025.
“Siguro dapat mag‑ready siya doon dahil kapatid niya mismo ang humihingi ng imbestigasyon dahil may nakita yata yung kanyang kapatid,” Tulfo remarked, stressing the unusual dynamic of a senator’s sibling pressing for accountability.
Tulfo admitted he was previously unaware of the ₱6‑billion allocation, noting his status as a newcomer in the chamber. He said the Blue Ribbon Committee intends to invite Lino to shed light on the issue, alongside other figures including detained former lawmaker Mike Defensor, lawyer Levito Baligod, and several former bodyguards.
The committee is scheduled to formalize its membership on July 27, coinciding with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s State of the Nation Address.
Tulfo said the inquiry would be among its first major undertakings, signaling a potentially contentious hearing that could place Sen. Alan Cayetano in a politically awkward position as his brother pushes for scrutiny of projects linked to his bailiwick.# (RRN)
