Roxas City-based broadcaster Jay Lavapiez survived an assassination attempt early Monday, prompting condemnation from the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP).
At around 5:45 a.m., Lavapiez was driving to his station when two men on a motorcycle opened fire in Barangay Cagay.
He evaded the gunmen by zigzagging his SUV and feigning injury after pulling over. The assailants fled, leaving Lavapiez shaken but unharmed.
Police in Roxas City have launched an investigation and pledged to provide security detail for the broadcaster.
The NUJP urged authorities to swiftly identify the perpetrators and mastermind, stressing accountability in attacks against journalists.
Lavapiez and his wife, fellow broadcaster India, currently face cyber libel charges filed by local officials. # (ZIA LUNA)
