The Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) has called on the people to march together to the Senate on Monday, June 1, to express outrage at the maneuvers of the Duterte-aligned majority bloc, which openly seeks to shield Vice President Sara Duterte, Senator Bato dela Rosa, and other allies from accountability.
BAYAN warned that if the pro‑Duterte gang insists, it must be made clear that their “shamelessness” carries a heavy political price.
The group stressed that the Duterte‑led bloc is colluding to distort Senate rules, allowing absent members to participate and vote in plenary sessions. This, they said, is meant to protect fugitive Dela Rosa and other majority members facing corruption and plunder charges.
According to BAYAN, this exposes the fragile grip of the pro‑Duterte majority on Senate leadership, which could collapse once their corruption cases are confronted.
“The latest maneuver of the trembling majority is a desperate attempt to cling to Senate control and turn the impeachment trial into a stage to absolve the vice president and boost her candidacy,” BAYAN declared in a statement.
At the same time, the group said this is a blatant move to extend impunity and make the Senate a sanctuary for corrupt members who repeatedly violate human rights.
BAYAN believes the proposed rule changes directly undermine the people’s demand for truth, accountability, and justice. # (ZIA LUNA)
