The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) joined Senate reporters Thursday in denouncing Sen. Rodante Marcoleta’s attacks on the press, after he branded journalists “paid hacks” during a blue ribbon committee hearing.
NUJP said Marcoleta’s remarks were clear attempts to erode public trust in the media amid coverage of the intensifying rift between political camps.
“Journalists ferret out the truth and convey it to the public. This includes asking questions to whoever needs to be held accountable,” the group stressed.
The union added that portraying the media as partisan only distracts from real issues, noting that corruption allegations against either side must be investigated fully.
“Journalism’s loyalty is to the people, not to any partisan group with vested interests,” NUJP said. # (ZIA LUNA)
