Makabayan Bloc: ‘Budget of Betrayal’ — ₱116B Pork, Cuts to Services

The Makabayan Bloc strongly opposed the proposed 2027 National Budget, casting a resounding NO vote on House Bill No. 10858 during its third and final reading.

Progressive lawmakers accused the measure of diverting billions of pesos into pork‑type allocations while cutting essential social services.

According to the bloc’s analysis, ₱116.32 billion in funds were reallocated, with ₱100.44 billion identified as pork‑style insertions.

At the same time, allocations for health, education, disaster preparedness, agriculture, irrigation, and government employee benefits were reduced.

“While Filipinos endure high prices, inadequate health services, overcrowded classrooms, and insufficient disaster aid, billions are funneled into programs that resemble pork barrel and patronage politics,” the bloc said in a statement. “The national budget must not be treated as an ATM for the corrupt.”

Bayan Muna joined calls to abolish pork barrel allocations, restore funding for vital social services, and provide higher wages and fair benefits for government workers. # (RRN)
