đź“·: Student leaders demand Senate President Escudero to inhibit from the impeachment trial, citing that delays point to bias and have squandered the legitimacy of the Senate.
A coalition of student leaders from state and private universities marched to the Senate on Monday to deliver a strongly worded open letter calling on Senate President Chiz Escudero to relinquish his role as presiding judge in Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial.
Invoking public trust and accountability, the letter—signed by 24 student councils and academic organizations—criticized Escudero’s continued involvement as a threat to the credibility of the process.
It warned that prolonged delays have fostered a “toxic environment for public discourse,” shifting attention away from the allegations against the Vice President and toward backroom deals and political maneuvering.
The student leaders also tied symbolic red ribbons around the Senate complex, demanding a credible impeachment process and accountability from all government officials.
“If the Senate under Escudero still wishes to maintain its mandate to try this case without fear or favor, then the Senate President himself must take unprecedented action and recuse himself from the impeachment proceedings forthwith,” asserted SPARK national spokesperson, Milo Basuel.
They argued that the continued delay of the impeachment proceedings has not only “squandered the legitimacy of the Senate” but also pointed to the “bias of its presiding officer.”
Escudero has earlier stated that the Senate can move to dismiss the impeachment case without going through a formal trial.
As of late, it was reported that the senator-judges are mulling over to move the date for convening the impeachment court to August 4.
The activist group remains firm in its call for the immediate trial and investigation of Duterte, towards justice and accountability from all corrupt officials in government. #
