Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) called the alliance between the Dutertes, Senator Imee Marcos, and Deputy Speaker Camille Villar a union of convenience and opportunism.
“As in any alliance of traditional politicians of the ruling elite, theirs is an alliance of convenience and opportunism. They are only united in staying in power and accumulating more power,” Bayan president and Makabayan campaign manager Renato Reyes, Jr. said on Vice President Sara Duterte’s so-called “common vision.”
“There can be no peaceful and prosperous Philippines when there is no accountability for extrajudicial killings and corruption,” Reyes said. “There can be no peaceful and prosperous Philippines when human rights violations are rampant and the plunder of confidential funds is the norm.”
The Vice President earlier claimed that the senatorial slate backed by the Duterte camp, along with Marcos and Villar, was united by a shared aspiration for peace and prosperity.
Reyes, however, slammed this framing, asserting that the alliance follows a familiar playbook of traditional politicians banding together for personal and political gain.
“This is an alliance to stop the impeachment and to remain in power beyond 2028,” he added.
Reyes urged voters to reject what he described as the latest version of a “Uniteam for convenience,” referencing the UniTeam or Marcos-Duterte tandem that dominated the 2022 elections.
“We call on the people to reject this latest iteration of ‘Uniteam for convenience and self-serving interests.’ Fight for candidates who will truly represent the interests of the people,” he said. (TCSP)
