Marcos declines to comment on Mary Jane Veloso repatriation update

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday, December 10, declined to provide updates on the repatriation of Filipina death row convict Mary Jane Veloso.

“We were asked by the Indonesian government not to make any announcements until everything is settled,” Marcos told reporters when asked by reporters if Veloso could return to the Philippines before Christmas.

Veloso has been on death row in Indonesia since 2010 after being convicted of drug trafficking. She was caught with 2.6 kilos of heroin in Yogyakarta and was given the death sentence.

However, her case gained international attention, and she was granted a stay of execution in 2015. Recently, the Philippines and Indonesia reached an agreement for her repatriation.

Justice spokesperson Mico Clavano earlier announced that Indonesia had signaled its intent to transfer Mary Jane Veloso to the Philippines by Christmas.

The transfer was formalized after a high-level meeting between officials from Indonesia and the Philippines held overseas. (TCSP)
