Comelec strips 5.35M names from its official voters’ list

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) had just stripped its list of over five million registered voters as part of its preparation for the 2025 midterm election.

According to Comelec chairman George Erwin Garcia, a total of 5,105,191 registered voters were deactivated from the official list while 248,972 names were deleted.

‘Those deleted were either dead or those who were found with multiple and double registration,” Garcia said.

He also hinted at delisting registered voters who have not been actively participating by way of casting their votes in two successive regular elections. Likewise forming part of the delisted roster were those who lost their Filipino citizenship, those who have submitted non-valid documents and those whom the court has ordered stripped from the list.

Interestingly over 400,000 delisted voters have reportedly applied for reactivation since January in time for next year’s democratic exercise.

Based on the poll body’s data, Calabarzon region posted the highest number of delisted voters.

As this developed, the Comelec reported that the ongoing voter registration has so far solicited over 5 million applications – 4.6 million of which have already been approved.

The voter registration period, which kicked off on February 12 will end on Sept. 30. (ANGEL F. JOSE)
