Batangas landslide kills 4, Metro and Rizal under water

INCESSANT downpour caused a landslide in Agoncillo town in Batangas killing four persons including a 28-year old pregnant woman, according to a local government report.

Initial information from the Agoncillo municipal government showed that the landslide struck in Sitio Manalao, Subic Ilaya.

Aside from the woman whom the LGU described as “six months on the way,” killed in the incident were three children aged 9, 13 and 15. Their identities remain unavailable as of this writing.

No other details are available as of this writing.

This comes as Metro Manila major streets were rendered impassable due to the relentless rain caused by typhoon Carina enhanced southwest monsoon.

According to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), gutter to knee-high floods stalled vehicles as early as 6:00 this morning.

As of 6:30 a.m., roads were submerged in an 8 to 19-inch deep flood including Bonifacio Drive 25th Street northbound and southbound, Dimasalang cor. Becerra St. Sta. Cruz, España – Lacson Ave. Intersection, Roxas Ave. – Kalaw, Vito Cruz to Taft Ave., España – R. Magsaysay, España-Antipolo St.,España – P.Margal/ Blumentritt, and España- M. Dela Fuente, in the City of Manila.

Likewise under water are G. Araneta – Ma. Clara, E. Rodriguez – Araneta Avenue, and Balintawak in Quezon City.

Busy roads in Pasay City were also rendered impassable, which includes Andrews Ave. – Tramo, Roxas Blvd. – EDSA and Airport Road – Domestic Road.

Orense – Guadalupe is closed to all types of vehicles amid 19 inch-deep flood water.

Residents near Marikina River were also forced to evacuate following the city disaster unit’s second alarm.
In Rizal Province, not even Antipolo City was spared from flooding. Lakeshore towns of Cainta, Taytay, Angono, Binangonan, Cardona, Morong, Baras, Tanay, Pililla and Jalajala also reported floods in their area.

Water from the upstream also swelled rivers rendering residential areas under water in the towns of Montalban and San Mateo. (ANGEL F. JOSE)
