Arrested hackers selling sensitive West PH Sea info to highest bidder

FROM all indications, China has every bit of information on the government’s strategy – including the scheduled resupply mission – in the West Philippine Sea.

This comes as the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) recovered a database containing huge amounts of sensitive information from two arrested suspects behind the hacking of government websites, including that of the Philippine Navy.

According to the NBI, two suspects were collared after they tried to sell the personal information of thousands of cable subscribers in Tagaytay City.

After the arrest, the operatives recovered electronic devices where they discovered  databases containing the Philippine Navy’s data on the West Philippine Sea.

Likewise found were personal information of 300,000 police officers whose addresses, contact numbers, email and even the firearms issued to them by the Philippine National Police (PNP).

The unnamed suspects, NBI added, have been targeting government websites since 2013.

“We are in the process of validating those claims. Pag lumabas ang aming forensic findings, magiging conclusive ang aming basis. That’s the time ipapatawag ang mga involved na government and private entities,” NBI cybercrime chief Jeremy Lontoc said.

Alarmed by the development, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) said it is coordinating with the NBI to verify the details of the data.

During the interrogation, one of the two suspects admitted to the phishing activities he committed to bank clients, where he claimed to have earned millions of pesos.

“Pinapadalhan ko gamit ang email nila. Pag naclick nila, nag login po sila, dederecho sa system. 11 p.m., then after nuon, inaano ko ng 12 a.m.. Then, nagrereset ang limit po niya. Tulog din ang mga tao, wala silang kaalam-alam,” the unnamed suspect said.

Meanwhile, NBI Director Jaime Santiago appealed to the public to immediately report calls and messages which contained links.

“Pagka may tumatawag sa inyo, from your bank, may nangyari daw sa iyong account, huwag kang maniwala, sabihin mo sige pupuntahan ko sa bangko. Ireport nyo sa amin, we have capability to locate yung number na tumawag sa inyo,” Santiago assured. (ANGEL F. JOSE)
