Baste to Bong Go: Don’t you have your own political stance?

Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte on Thursday, June 20, slammed Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go for using his political connections for personal publicity and failing to take a firm stand against tyranny during the Marcos administration.

In a Facebook post, the Davao City mayor did not hold back in his critique of Go, who is known for his close association with former President Rodrigo Duterte as a former aide.

For context, Go posted a statement emphasizing his commitment to the Filipino people.

Accompanied by a selfie with Rodrigo Duterte, Go reiterated his dedication to public service and the values imparted to him by the former president.

“Gaya ng parati naming sinasabi, there is always a time for everything. Ito ang panahon para mas lalong unahin ang kapakanan ng ating mga kababayan,” Go said.

“Tulad ng payo ni FPRRD sa akin mula noon hanggang ngayon: ‘Gawin ang tama, gampanan ang tungkulin sa bayan, at unahin ang interes ng mga Pilipino,'” Go also said.

Go concluded his statement with a vow to continue his service and advocacy for the rights of all Filipinos, expressing gratitude to his supporters.

However, this message did not sit well with the former president’s son, who responded with an uncharacteristically scathing rebuke.

“There is a time for everything, and the time is now to stand against tyranny, Mr. Bong Go,” Duterte said.

“Sige ra kag selfie nga naay ayuda ginahatag, and if not selfie ana akong amahan kay gamiton nimo for publicity. Wala kay imohang ikabarog nga kaugalingong pulitika (You keep taking selfies while giving aid, and if not, you use my father publicity. Don’t you have your own political stance)?” Duterte added.

Duterte’s sharp words seem to address what he perceives as Go’s over-reliance on photo opportunities and his connection to the former President to maintain political relevance.

He challenged Go to reflect on his actions and the integrity of his political career.

“Read your own caption and reflect if you are really actually doing what you are saying. Pussy!” Duterte said.

Duterte quoted the Italian poet Dante Alighieri, saying, “The hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, in times of great moral crisis, maintain their neutrality.” (TCSP)
