OWWA holds first ‘OFW Trans Icon’ pageant

Six transgender women from the Ilocos Region–all with relatives working abroad–competed for the title of “2024 OFW Trans Icon” in a groundbreaking pageant held recently at the La Union Convention Center here.

The event, organized by the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) Regional Welfare Office 1, coincided with both Migrant Workers’ Day and Pride Month.

It aimed to highlight the crucial role that the LGBTQIA++ community plays in Filipino families and the country’s economy.

Nel Bangan Layco, representing Eastern Pangasinan, was crowned the winner.

Her sister works as a waitress in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Layco impressed the judges with her consistent performance, winning awards in Best Resort Wear, Best in Production, and Best in Provincial Costume.

In an interview, Layco expressed gratitude for the platform provided to LGBTQIA++ members and OFW families.

“[I’m] feeling grateful and, at the same time, very happy since we are celebrating Migrant Workers’ Day. We are giving opportunities for the OFWs, or migrant workers, to be visible in our society. Our migrant workers’ role is significant in both the Philippine economy and the global workers market,” Layco said.

Joshy Marzo (La Union) and Christienne Corrales (Ilocos Sur) were named first and second runners-up, respectively.

Marzo bagged awards for Best in Evening Gown and Best in Talent, while Corrales received the Miss Articulate award.

OWWA Region 1 Director Gerardo Rimorin emphasizes the pageant’s aim to foster unity and acceptance.

Rimorin states that this event celebrates equality and progress for the LGBTQIA++ community.

He said, “the contest aims to promote awareness, acceptance, and unity within the LGBTQIA++ and migrant worker communities, fostering a more inclusive and equal society for all. Let us reaffirm the creation of a society where everyone can thrive regardless of their orientation, sexuality, or gender identity.”

The OFW Trans Icon pageant paves the way for a more progressive and diverse celebration of Migrant Workers’ Day, highlighting the contributions of LGBT+ Filipinos and their families who make sacrifices for a better life.

It also bridges the gap between the LGBT+ and migrant worker communities, fostering a more inclusive and equal society for all. (ANTONIO)
