Advocacy group Bantay Impeachment called for a fair and transparent impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, warning against political maneuvering and delaying tactics.
In its statement, the group said the trial is inseparable from broader corruption issues involving Malacañang and several senators, noting that the public has awaited proceedings since the derailment of the first impeachment process in 2025.
Bantay Impeachment stressed that the Senate must weigh evidence and allow witnesses to testify fully, cautioning that senators’ votes should not be reduced to political transactions.
The group added that the trial implicates not only Duterte but the entire Senate, given the gravity of the charges.
The statement also urged continuation of investigations into the flood control scam, warning that failure to prosecute allies of the administration would render the trial “self-serving political maneuvering.”
Citizens were urged to monitor the trial closely, with Bantay Impeachment announcing a major mobilization in front of the Senate on July 6 to coincide with the start of proceedings.# (ZIA LUNA)
