Zubiri to current, future Senate presidents: Do not to get too comfortable in your position

Former Senate President Migz Zubiri told the current and future Senate leaders not to get too comfortable in their positions after the Senator was ousted as the upper chamber’s chief four months ago.

During the Kapihan sa Senado Forum on Thursday, September 26, Zubiri said that the Senate presidents should “always be ready to be replaced” or “respect the decision of the majority.”

He also said that plans to ouster plans are “normal” in the upper house, especially right before the institution takes a break.

There are reports of another coup to remove Senate President Francis Escudero, just four months after the leadership of the Senate changed.

Several reports have mentioned that the rumors of a coup against Escudero have been circulating for two weeks now.

Alleged plots to remove Escudero from his post as a Senate President have been linked to Senators Loren Legarda and Cynthia Villar. Both of them have denied any participation in these plots.

“It’s a normal occurrence. I think if you are Senate President, don’t be too comfortable in your seat as Senate President,” Zubiri said.

“My advice to Senate Presidents, current and future, is to never warm up too much on your seat [and] never be too attached to your office,” Zubiri added.

Escudero, for his part, has already said that these talks about a coup d’état are just gossip.

Even though Escudero wouldn’t say anything about “mere rumors,” he did mention that Senate officers, including the President, work for the majority.

“Why will I comment on mere rumors from unknown sources?  Suffice it to say [that] the entire senate leadership serves at the pleasure of the majority,” the Senate leader said in a Viber message to Senate reporters. (TCSP)
