Vilma Santos deserves to be National Artist

Yesterday, June 30, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) closed the call for nominations for the Order of National Artist 2025. This prestigious honor is conferred on Filipino individuals who have made significant contributions to the Philippines through their achievements in Architecture and Allied Arts, Dance, Design, Film and Broadcast Arts, Literature, Music, Theater, and Visual Arts.

The President of the Philippines bestows the esteemed and highly sought-after title of National Artist, upon the recommendation of both the NCCA and the CCP. I join the League of Filipino Actors (AktorPh) headed by Dingdong Dantes and the many other voices that nominated Ms. Vilma Santos-Recto for National Artist for Film and Broadcast.

Ms. Santos-Recto, affectionately known as the Star for All Seasons, has not only graced our screens with her unparalleled talent but has also significantly contributed to the cultural and artistic landscape of our nation.

Ate Vi’s illustrious career spans over six decades, during which she has delivered countless performances that have resonated with audiences and critics alike. Her early start as a child actress in the film “Trudis Liit” earned her the first of the many FAMAS Awards, setting the stage for a career marked by excellence and versatility. Her dual role in “Dama de Noche” further solidified her status as a leading actress in the industry, showcasing her ability to captivate and engage viewers with her compelling portrayals.

Most notable are her socially relevant films such as “Burlesk Queen,” “Relasyon,” “Sister Stella L,” “Dekada ’70,” “Bata, Bata, Paano Ka Ginawa,” and “Anak,” which not only achieved critical acclaim but also sparked important conversations about societal issues. These films have become landmarks in Philippine cinema, remembered for their poignant storytelling and Vilma’s powerful performances that brought complex characters to life.

Beyond her contributions to film, the Star for All Seasons’ dedication to public service is equally commendable. As the first female mayor and governor of Batangas, as well as the first congresswoman of the province’s 6th District, she has been a trailblazer in governance, advocating for the arts and using her platform to support the movie industry. Her efforts to preserve and restore classic Filipino films speak volumes about her commitment to the cultural heritage of our country.

Without a doubt, Ate Vi’s achievements are a testament to her influence and legacy in the film industry. She has been recognized with the most Gawad URIANs from the country’s top film critics, a clear indication of her impact and the respect she commands within the artistic community. Her work has not only entertained but also educated and inspired, making her a true icon of Philippine cinema.

In light of her outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment to the culture and the arts, I firmly believe that Ate Vi deserves the honor of being named a National Artist. Her body of work and her service to the nation exemplify the qualities that this award seeks to recognize, and her elevation to the rank of National Artist would be a fitting tribute to her remarkable career.
