Former Bayan Muna Congressman Carlos Isagani Zarate today warned that the hasty relocation of US Typhon missile launchers from Laoag Airport in Ilocos Norte  proves these weapons systems make the Philippines a target for attacks from enemies of the United States, not necessarily enemies of the Filipino people.

“The sudden relocation of these missile systems, especially following the arrest of an alleged Chinese spy, suggests that sensitive information about these weapons may have been compromised,” Zarate said. “This only confirms our long-standing position that hosting these weapons systems makes our country a clear magnet for espionage and potential military strikes.”

The former lawmaker emphasized that the Typhon system’s capability to strike targets in both China and Russia makes the Philippines vulnerable to retaliatory attacks. “These missiles are not for Philippine defense – they are offensive weapons that serve US military objectives in the region. Our people are being put at risk without their consent.”

“The recent arrest of alleged spies targeting military installations, including areas where US weapons are deployed, demonstrates the real dangers of allowing our territory to be used as a US military outpost. These weapons of mass destruction in our soil are the real, clear and present danger to our people and security,”  Zarate added.

He called for the “immediate removal, not mere relocation, of the Typhon system and all US weapons from Philippine soil.”

“We demand that the Marcos Jr. administration stop this vassal-like policy and prioritize the safety and security of the Filipino people over US hegemonic military interests. Our constitution mandates an independent foreign policy, not one that makes us a pawn in great power conflicts.”#
