Topacio’s Misogyny Shows ‘Rot’ in DDS Culture, Makabayan Bloc Urges IBP Probe

Lawmakers from the Makabayan Bloc have called on the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) to investigate lawyer Ferdinand Topacio for “conduct unbecoming of a lawyer” following his misogynistic attacks against Gabriela Women’s Party Rep. Sarah Elago and actress Jasmine Curtis-Smith.

In a joint statement, ACT Teachers Rep. Antonio Tinio and Kabataan Rep. Atty. Renee Louise Co condemned Topacio’s remarks on his DWIZ radio program, where he slut-shamed Curtis-Smith for posting bikini photos and demeaned Elago’s political participation.

The bloc said Topacio’s comments reflect “the rotten, woman-hating core of Duterte apologist culture,” noting that his attacks came at the start of Women’s Month.

“The Duterte political culture that Topacio champions is one that has consistently treated women as objects, as targets, as acceptable casualties,” the statement read.

“We have seen it in the former President’s own rape jokes from the highest podium in the land. We see it now in his apologists who attack any woman who refuses to stay quiet.”

The lawmakers stressed that Topacio’s remarks perpetuate rape culture and undermine women’s dignity, adding that his conduct “is a disgrace to the legal profession.”

They urged DWIZ management to review the program’s content and the House Committee on Women and Gender Equality to take cognizance of the matter.

“This is not commentary. This is harassment. This is abuse dressed up in a suit and a law degree,” the progressive solons said.

“Topacio’s outburst against Rep. Elago is a direct attack on women’s political participation,” the bloc said.

“To Jasmine Curtis-Smith and every woman who has been attacked, shamed, or threatened simply for speaking up: your courage is seen, and you do not stand alone.”  (ZIA LUNA)
