Teachers from across regions nationwide under the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) held a unity walk today in Baguio City to denounce the worsening poverty, rampant corruption and persisting impunity and to reiterate calls for substantial salary increase, better working conditions, higher education budget, end to corruption and accountability for kleptocrats, and long-overdue justice for all victims of extrajudicial killings and state-sponsored attacks.

“Today’s unity walk demonstrates teachers’ collective outrage against a government that has abandoned its responsibility to the people. From Luzon to Mindanao, teachers are rising up to demand accountability for the systematic plunder of public funds while our schools grapple with severe shortages, our families struggle with poverty wages, our ranks and the Filipino people face state-sponsored violations of human and trade union rights,” stated Vladimer Quetua, ACT Chairperson.

“Kasama kaming mga guro na biktima ng hindi nakabubuhay na sweldo, barat na umento, mataas na presyo ng bilihin at iba pang gastusin, mababang pondo sa edukasyon, at panunupil ng estado. Kaya’t kasama rin kami ng mamamayan sa pagkilos upang singilin at panagutin ang gobyernong nagpapakasasa sa kaban ng bayan at nagpapahirap sa taumbayan,” Quetua added.

“Today marks our strong opposition to poverty, corruption, and impunity, as we join the mounting call for accountability from the Marcos-Duterte administration. As they exploit the nation’s wealth to advance their political interests, countless Filipinos remain mired in a worsening economic crisis. On January 31, we will unite with the broader masses in a nationwide protest to assert the collective power of the Filipino people,” ended Quetua.#
