Teacher solon calls for probe on GCash system glitches, consumer protection mechanisms

House Deputy Minority Leader and ACT Teachers Representative France Castro called for an immediate investigation into the recurring system glitches affecting GCash users, emphasizing the need for stronger consumer protection mechanisms for digital payment platforms.

“These repeated system failures affecting GCash users are deeply concerning. We are receiving numerous complaints from citizens who suddenly found their hard-earned money wiped out from their accounts without explanation. As someone who personally experienced having my account permanently deactivated without due process, I understand the anxiety and frustration of affected users,” Castro stated.

The progressive lawmaker emphasized that with over 94 million users relying on GCash for daily transactions, the company must be held accountable for ensuring the security and stability of their system.

“GCash cannot simply dismiss these incidents as isolated cases. We demand transparency regarding the exact number of affected users and the concrete steps being taken to prevent such incidents from recurring. The arbitrary deactivation of accounts without due process is also unacceptable,” Castro added.

Castro called on the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) and concerned House committees to conduct an investigation into these incidents and review existing regulations on digital payment platforms.

“We need stronger regulatory frameworks to protect consumers using digital payment services. These platforms handle people’s hard-earned money, and they must be held to the highest standards of accountability and transparency,” Castro concluded.#
