As the nation observes the Chinese New Year, with its tradition of renewal, hope, and unity, we extend our warmest greetings to our Chinese brothers and sisters, both in the Philippines and across the world. This occasion reminds us of our shared values of peace, harmony, and cooperation.
We also take this moment to reflect on the pressing issues that affect our region, particularly the escalating tensions in the West Philippine Sea. The militarization of these waters by external powers, including the United States and China, poses a grave threat to the stability, security, and sovereignty of the Philippines and the broader Asia-Pacific region.
In the spirit of peace and respect for sovereignty, we call for the complete demilitarization of the West Philippine Sea and a peaceful resolution of all standing conflicts. The presence of foreign military forces, whether from the US or China, only exacerbates tensions and undermines the prospects for regional peace. The Philippines must not become a pawn in the geopolitical rivalry between these superpowers. Our people deserve peace, not the constant threat of conflict.
We urge all parties to respect international law, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and to engage in peaceful dialogue to resolve disputes. The West Philippine Sea should be a zone of cooperation, not confrontation—a space where nations can work together and ensure the well-being of our communities. It should not be an arena for an arms race between imperialist powers, with the Philippines caught in the middle.
On this occasion of the Chinese New Year, let us work towards regional peace and solidarity. Let us reject the path of militarization and instead embrace diplomacy, mutual respect, and the collective pursuit of a just and equitable future for all.
May the Year of the Snake bring wisdom, courage, and the resolve to build a world free from war and oppression. Together, let us strive for a future where peace prevails in the West Philippine Sea and across our region. #
