We, the Makabayan bloc representatives, express our deepest condolences to the family of Albay First District Representative Edcel C. Lagman, a true statesman, principled legislator, and unwavering defender of human rights who passed away today at the age of 82.
The passing of Rep. Lagman is a profound loss not only to Congress but to the entire nation. His legacy as a fearless advocate for human rights, democracy, and social justice will forever be etched in our country’s history. As a close friend and ally of the Makabayan bloc, he stood with us in countless battles for people’s rights and welfare.
“Congressman Lagman was more than a colleague – he was a mentor and inspiration to many progressive legislators. His sharp legal mind and moral courage were instrumental in defending human rights and civil liberties, especially during the darkest times,” said Rep. France Castro.
“Si Ka Edcel ay hindi lang basta kakampi, kundi isang tunay na kapatid sa pakikibaka. Ang kanyang pagtatanggol sa karapatang pantao at demokrasya ay naging halimbawa ng tunay na paglilingkod sa bayan,” Rep. Arlene Brosas emphasized.
His principled stance against charter change, his authorship of the Anti-Enforced Disappearance Act and the Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Bill and his steadfast defense of press freedom and civil liberties showcase his dedication to protecting democratic institutions and human rights.
“Malaking kawalan sa Kongreso at sa bansa ang pagpanaw ni Rep. Lagman. Ang kanyang mga prinsipyo at aral ay magsisilbing tanglaw sa aming patuloy na pakikibaka para sa karapatan at kagalingan ng mamamayang Pilipino,” Rep. Raoul Manuel added.
