So long, Chino Trinidad

There’s so much to envy about the fraternal closeness between Arnold Clavio and Chino Trinidad (RIP).

For a time, Chino had worked with GMA news covering the sports beat.

No longer “networkmates,” Chino and Igan (Arnold’s pet name) had never ceased being friends. After all, they might differ in terms of news they reported yet they were duty-bound to uphold the basic tenets of journalism: truth and public service.

The day after his daughter Floresse broke the sad news on social media, Igan shared on Instagram a screen shot of his convo with Chino.

Dated June 15, this was when Igan was confined at a hospital in BGC after he suffered a hemorrhagic stroke.

This is how their convo went:

Chino: Ayos ka na, Noy? Tama ka, we have to listen to our bodies.

Igan: (recovering) The worst is over. Ingat, hehe.

Chino: Marami ka pang gagawin at matutulungan.

Igan: Tayo.

Little did Igan–or their common industry friends–think that something worse was up ahead. Reports say that Chino collapsed at the Newport Resort Hotel (in the evening of July 13) where he was supposed to be at a meeting. He was immediately brought to the San Juan de Dios Hospital.

Cause of death: massive heart attack.

Chino had a scheduled medical checkup on July 17. What makes his untimely demise even more difficult to bear is that he would have turned 57 this July 27.

Igan included a “footnote” in his IG post that came with the convo: “Ikumusta mo ako kay ama.”

The “ama” the GMA news anchor was referring to was Mike Enriquez who left ahead.

Igan–as he is now so far–is undergoing physical and occupational therapies to get his right arm to function well again as it did prior to the stroke.

Having his “ama” and “brother” in a much better place now, no doubt, they’re watching over him as he regains his strength for the next newscast.

Our deepest sympathies to Chino’s family.
