Human rights alliance KARAPATAN expressed outrage over what it termed as a concerted vile effort to derail the impeachment trial of Vice President. Sara Duterte.
“The inordinate delays in commencing Sara Duterte’s trial is fuelling suspicions that a deal has already been forged between the warring Marcos and Duterte cliques to forego the trial altogether,” said Karapatan secretary general Cristina Palabay. “This, or to go through the motions of a trial and acquit Sara Duterte, or leave the question of her guilt hanging.”
“Known Duterte allies within the Senate have begun floating the idea that if the current congress tries Sara Duterte, her trial should be over by June 30, 2025, the last session day,” said Palabay. “They claim that the next Congress will not have the right to try her, a patently ridiculous claim that is contrary to what the Constitution mandates.”
“Such a scheme blatantly disregards the preponderance of evidence already gathered against Sara Duterte. Obviously, the powers that be are afraid that holding Sara Duterte accountable for graft and corruption and other crimes will trigger an avalanche of similar cases against other high-ranking officials, including Ferdinand Marcos Jr,” Palabay added.
“This is trapo politics at its worst,” decried Palabay. “KARAPATAN will join the people in condemning the Marcos Jr. regime for dereliction of its constitutional duty. We will seek redress beyond the Senate halls. We cannot allow such an injustice to prevail,” concluded Palabay.#
