FOR the nth time, the Land Transportation Office (LTO) is making a new “promise” to wipe out backlogs for plastic driver’s license cards and vehicle plates by July 1.

During a Palace press briefing, LTO Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza in his capacity as LTO chief claimed that the agency has already secured a steady supply of plastic cards for driver’s licenses to meet the demand until the end of this year.

“By July 1 of this year, dapat wala na po backlog and we can see na on track tayo diyan. ‘Yung mga nag-expire ng April 30, nagre-renew na po ang kanilang cards pati ‘yung last year; tuloy-tuloy po ang pag-renew ng kanilang cards,” Mendoza was quoted as saying.

According to Mendoza, drivers who are using printed papers as temporary driver’s licenses may claim their plastic driver’s license cards at the LTO district office where new applications or renewals were made.

As far as vehicle owners using MV file numbers in the absence of the LTO-issued car plates, the LTO boasted that there are enough for those in the agency.

“By July 1, there should be no temporary plates anymore,” he assured.

The Department of Transportation already awarded contracts for 9.7 million plastic cards for driver’s licenses. However, issuance has been repeatedly delayed due to what the government referred to as supply shortage and procedural setbacks.

In a similar case embarking on another promise, the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) vowed to restore functionality of airport escalators which have been unserviceable for the past few months. (ANGEL F. JOSE)
