Police Major, 3 other cops arrested for kidnapping

EFFORTS of Philippine National Police (PNP) to cleanse its ranks absorbed a serious setback anew as four cops — including a police major were arrested after for their alleged involvement in the kidnapping of four foreign nationals in Pasay City.

“This incident is a serious breach of public trust and the core values of the police force. The Philippine National Police (PNP) will not tolerate any misconduct within their ranks,” Interior and Local Government Secretary Benhur Abalos said at a press briefing in Camp Crame.

The suspects — Police Major Christel Carlo Villanueva, Police Senior Master Sergeant Angelito David, Police Master Sergeant Ricky Tabora, and Police Staff Sergeant Ralph Tumanguil were presented to the media during the press briefing in Camp Crame.

All four suspects are assigned in Metro Manila.

“They are committed to transparency throughout the investigation and prosecution process and will provide regular updates to ensure all developments are communicated effectively,” he added.

Investigation showed yhat on June 2, four foreign nationals were onboard their vehicle when motorcycle-riding cops flagged them down along Taft Avenue.

Soon after, the victims were forcibly dragged into a white van that has been tailing them all along.

According to Abalos, two of the four victims managed to escape from their abductors and went directly to an undisclosed poli station for help. It was not certain though how the victims got loose from the armed suspects.

The two others, who sustained injuries, were released after a P2.5 million ransom was given to the kidnappers.

Charges ranging from kidnapping with ransom, robbery, and carnapping will be filed against the policemen. (ANGEL F. JOSE)
