Palace Press Officer Claire Castro hopes that Vice President Sara Duterte’s statement that she wants her impeachment trial to be a “bloodbath” is just a figure of speech.

”Medyo may pagka-bayolente ang tugon ng ating Bise Presidente. We hope it’s just a figure of speech,” Castro said in a press briefing.

Castro continued, “Kung iyan naman po ang nais niya at talaga naman pong magkakaroon ng balitaktakan kapag nagkaroon ng trial… hayaan na lang po natin itong gumulong.”

“Hindi po makikialam ang Pangulo patungkol sa ganyang problem,” Castro replied when asked about the Palace’s opinion on whose blood should be shed.

Former justice secretary Leila de Lima described VP Sara’s rhetoric as reflective of her family’s “trademark” pattern of “panggugulo, kayabangan, pagiging arogante

“In an impeachment trial, the sole focus is the person being impeached, meaning there should be no bloodbath,” De Lima said in a statement on Sunday, May 18. “If blood is spilled, it would be the impeached individual’s, not that of the prosecutors, senator-judges, administration, or the public.”

She further suggested that Duterte’s comments appeared to be an attempt to intimidate or derail the proceedings before they even commenced.

Speaking to TeleRadyo on Monday, May 19, De Lima emphasized that the trial is meant to uncover the truth and hold Duterte accountable for the allegations outlined in the articles of impeachment. (ZIA LUNA)
