Malacañang has announced the appointment of Atty. Melvin Matibag as the new director of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), replacing Atty. Lito Magno who assumed the post in October 2025.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro confirmed the designation during a briefing, saying President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. entrusted the role to Matibag based on confidence in his capability and integrity.
“Unang-una, masasabi natin bakit niya in-appoint o ia-appoint? Nandun po yung tiwala. Nakitaan po niya si Atty. Melvin Matibag na maaaring pagtiwalaan, maaaring magtrabaho para sa gobyerno. Pero kung ano ang reason, hindi pa po nasasabi sa akin in details,” Castro said.
Matibag previously served as acting Cabinet Secretary in March 2022 under the Duterte administration. He resigned as PDP-Laban secretary-general in October 2023 following internal party disagreements over the use of confidential and intelligence funds by Vice President Sara Duterte.
He has publicly stated that civilian offices such as the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education should not be granted confidential and intelligence funds. (ZIA LUNA)
