Nasty Dynasty: Binay sisters switching posts?

IN what appears to be a compromise agreement seen to break the family feud, Makati City Mayor Abigail Binay would likely run for senator under the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), as the outgoing Senator Nancy Binay guns for the top elective post in the city that her family has held for almost 38 years.

According to former Senate President and NPC chairman Vicente Sotto III, the younger Binay is among the party’s top picks for the 2028 senatorial derby, which would have him and reelectionist Sen. Lito Lapid as well.

“Definitely, as of now, I know that we are considering at least 3 from the party: myself, Lito Lapid and Abby Binay,” Sotto told reporters during the formal merger ceremony between NPC and President Ferdinand Marcos Jr’s Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) in Makati City.

As for outgoing Senator Nancy, earlier reports hinted at the possibility of clashing against her younger sister’s husband, Makati Rep. Luis Campos.

“It’s basically a politics of compromise. The recent development may eventually force Campos to run for congressman in the same congressional district he represents in Congress, except that this time, it forms part of Taguig,” a source privy to the Binay family said.

The Binay political clout in Makati dates back in 1986 after President Corazon Aquino appointed the lawyer Jejomar Binay as appointed officer-in-charge of what was still then Municipality of Makati.

In 2019, Binay siblings Junjun and Abigail faced off with the latter winning the top elective post, as the family rift remains to date. (ANGEL F. JOSE)
