Mexico has elected its first woman president, with trailblazer Claudia Sheinbaum set to step into office when she takes over from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on October 1.

The climate scientist, 61, is the former Mayor of Mexico City, where she was also the first woman to fill the role. She is part of the left-wing Morena party.

Claudia is also the country’s first Jewish president. ‘For the first time in the 200 years of the republic, I will become the first woman president of Mexico’, the mum-of-two said as she spoke in the country’s capital on Monday.

This election was the biggest the country had ever seen, with more than 20,000 congressional and local positions available, according to the National Electoral Institute.

Sky News reported that it was also the bloodiest in modern history after the number of assassinated candidates reached 38 before election day.

Claudia won between 58 per cent and 60 per cent of the vote, giving her a lead of about 30 percentage points over her main rival in the election, businesswoman Xóchitl Gálvez, according to the BBC.

Claudia will spend six years in power and live in the National Palace during her term in office.

The granddaughter of Bulgarian and Lithuanian Jewish migrants, Claudia has faced scrutiny with some questioning her roots to Mexico.

Claudia hit back at accusations that she wasn’t Mexican by releasing a picture of her birth certificate saying: ‘Mexico City.’

Like Simon Harris, she too posts clips on TikTok. Claudia shared videos with the news of her marriage in November 2023 to her university sweetheart, Jesus Tarriba. She is mum to two kids and grandmother to one.

Claudia won the election by a huge margin and is very popular, particularly amongst disadvantaged communities in the country. | via Evoke.ie
