Maris Racal’s film  wins at 75th Berlinale festival

Maris Racal scored a major success as her film Sunshine was given the Crystal Bear for Best Film at the 75th Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale).

With pride and honor, Racal dedicated her film’s artistic success to her mom via  Instagram story.

“Mom we won,” she said in her post.

A jury’s statement said that Racal’s movie explored  “a sensitive view on its modern and socially critical topic.”

The jurors unanimously believed that Sunshine   “touched us not only through the acting performances, but also with its dark, yet hopeful and empowering atmosphere, which the filmmakers created with their way of storytelling.”

“It raises our awareness by confronting us with the reality of the social and political problems it addresses, which unfortunately still exist today. The film’s balance of different moral perspectives and impressive stylistic elements creates an immersive reality that feels authentic and deeply moving,” the jurors noted.

The film megged by Antoinette Jadaone tells the struggles of a young gymnast (Maris) who is torn between keeping her baby and pursuing her dream to be in a national team.

Sunshine also casts Elijah Canlas, Xyriel Manabat, Annika Co and Jennica Garcia.

Sunshine initially premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last year and was later screened at the Palm Springs Film Festival. (NIGEL CHAVEZ DE ESTRADA)
