Marcos urges LGUs to prioritize public safety amid typhoon

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. told the local government units (LGUs) on Monday, September 2, to ensure the safety of the public, particularly students and workers.

In an interview in Malacañang, Marcos said the LGUs have the authority to decide on school suspensions, depending on the situation in their respective areas.

However, Marcos underscored the need to avoid situations where employees could get stranded at work due to worsening weather conditions.

“The LGUs also make their own decision with that except if there is a region-wide assessment na hindi pwedeng pumasok. Sa trabaho naman ang tinitignan lang namin ay kung makapunta ang mga empleyado natin makapasok at makauwi,” Marcos said.

“We are just watching it, and we will try to adjust. We leave a lot of the decision-making to the LGUs and to the regional offices kasi iba-iba ang sitwasyon,” Marcos added.

In the same interview, Marcos assured the public that the government is fully prepared to respond to Typhoon Enteng, which is currently threatening parts of Luzon, including Metro Manila.

He said that the government has established standard operating procedures to handle such weather disturbances, with close monitoring of the typhoon’s path and its potential impacts.

He noted that strong winds are currently the main concern but warned that the situation might worsen, especially in Metro Manila, as the typhoon is expected to intensify before moving towards Cagayan and heading north.

As for work and school arrangements on Tuesday, September 2, Marcos instructed agencies to provide timely updates to the public, preferably before the end of the day.

“Ang instruction ko sa kanila, kung maaari bago tayo matulog alam na natin kung may pasok bukas o hindi. Para makapag-adjust naman ‘yung mga tao,” the President said.

The government has already pre-positioned necessary resources in anticipation of the typhoon’s aftermath. Marcos urged the public to stay vigilant and adhere to safety protocols as the country braces for Typhoon Enteng’s impact. (TCSP)
