President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday, October 30, told the local government units (LGU) to prepare ahead of Super Typhoon Leon while they continue to recover from the impact of Typhoon Kristine.
The President made the remarks during the opening of the Maersk Optimus distribution center in Calamba City, Laguna, where he acknowledged the efforts of Laguna Governor Ramil Hernandez in addressing the needs of typhoon victims.
“Governor Ramil Hernandez has been working very hard over the past couple of days to try and do what we can for all of those victims of Kristine,” Marcos said.
“Unfortunately, mukhang may padating na naman kaya’t paghandaan natin nang mabuti,” he added.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced in its latest bulletin that Typhoon Leon has strengthened into a super typhoon and continues to pose a threat to extreme Northern Luzon.
As of 10 a.m., Leon was situated 350 km east of Calayan, Cagayan, with sustained winds of 185 kph near its center and gusts reaching up to 230 kph. The storm is moving west-northwest at a speed of 10 kph.
Leon is predicted to come closest to Batanes between late Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, October 31, with the possibility of making landfall not entirely ruled out.
It is anticipated to hit Taiwan’s eastern coast tomorrow and will exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) either later that day or early Friday morning. (TCSP)
