Marcos likely to extend Marbil’s term

There is a significant possibility that President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. will approve an extension of PNP chief Gen. Rommel Marbil’s term until the conclusion of the 2025 midterm elections.

Marbil is set to retire next month upon reaching his 56th birthday, which is the mandatory retirement age for uniformed personnel.

“There is a very strong argument for Marbil’s term extension as”it would not be good for stability especially to change the chief PNP in the middle of a campaign period and then approaching an election period,” Marcos Jr. stated.

“So, we are studying it. But I think that is probably a very strong argument to keep him on, at the very least, until after the elections,” he added.

The election period commenced on January 12 and will run until June 11, 2025. During this time, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) resolution 10999, issued on May 24, 2024, prohibits the “appointment, promotion, transfer, or hiring of government personnel.” (ZIA LUNA)
