Makabayan hails fisherfolk leader Ronnel Arambulo as a great asset to the Makabayan Senatorial slate

Makabayan co-chairperson Neri Colmenares, today expressed strong support for the candidacy of fisherfolk leader Ronnel Arambulo in the upcoming 2025 midterm senatorial elections.

“We are proud to welcome Ronnel Arambulo to the Makabayan senatorial slate,” said the former Bayan Muna solon. “His extensive experience as a grassroots leader and tireless advocate for the rights of fisherfolk makes him an invaluable addition to our team. Arambulo’s candidacy represents a significant step towards bringing the voices of our marginalized fishing communities to the halls of the Senate.”

Colmenares highlighted Arambulo’s track record of defending coastal communities and fishing grounds against reclamation and privatization, as well as his staunch advocacy for Philippine sovereignty in territorial waters.

“Ronnel Arambulo has consistently stood at the forefront of the struggle for our fisherfolk’s rights and our nation’s sovereignty,” Colmenares added. “His leadership in campaigns for the rights of  our fisherfolk to fish within our exclusive economic zone (EEZ), demonstrates his commitment to protecting our national interests.”

The Makabayan coalition sees Arambulo’s candidacy as a crucial opportunity to advance the agenda of the fisherfolk sector in the Senate, particularly on issues of sovereign fishing rights and the protection of Philippine waters.

“With Ronnel Arambulo in the Senate, we are confident that the pressing concerns of our fisherfolk and the critical issues surrounding our maritime territories will receive the attention and action they deserve,” Colmenares concluded.
