The Makabayan bloc strongly condemned the coordinated military strikes launched by the United States and Israel against Iran, branding the assault as a dangerous escalation that could trigger a catastrophic regional war in the Middle East.

In a statement, ACT Teachers Rep. Antonio Tinio, Gabriela Women’s Party Rep. Sarah Jane Elago, and Kabataan Party-list Rep. Atty. Renee Louise Co said the so-called “preemptive attack” was “naked imperialism cloaked in the rhetoric of self-defense,” violating international law and national sovereignty.

The lawmakers emphasized that Washington has no moral authority to lecture any nation on nuclear weapons or regional stability, pointing out that the US maintains hundreds of military bases worldwide and possesses the largest nuclear arsenal on the planet.

They added that Israel, which they accused of waging a genocidal campaign against Palestinians while keeping an undeclared nuclear program, has no right to define threats in the Middle East.

“The United States and Israel have once again demonstrated their utter disregard for international law, national sovereignty, and the lives of ordinary people,” the bloc said, warning that the strikes expose the hypocrisy of Western powers who claim to champion diplomacy while secretly preparing for war.

Makabayan urged the Marcos Jr. administration to condemn the aggression and reject any participation in US military operations against Iran, particularly through the use of Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites. They warned that EDCA drags the Philippines into conflicts serving only American strategic interests and makes the country a potential military target.

The bloc called on Filipinos to oppose US-Israel aggression and demand an end to Philippine complicity in American wars, stressing that resources spent on bombs and missiles should instead address poverty and hunger.

“The path to peace lies in respecting sovereignty, ending occupations, and building a new international order based on equality and mutual respect rather than domination and exploitation,” the statement concluded. (ZIA LUNA)
