Families of victims of extrajudicial killings, along with human rights advocates, have lodged a disbarment complaint against Rodrigo Duterte with the Supreme Court on January 17, 2025.
The petitioners, spearheaded by Lean Porquia, Atty. VJ Topacio, and Llore Pasco, who are relatives of the victims, are seeking Duterte’s disbarment on the grounds of breaching the Code of Professional Responsibility and Accountability (CPRA) and for exhibiting conduct unbefitting a lawyer.
They contend that Duterte has shown a blatant disregard for ethical norms and the rule of law, evidenced by his public admissions of leading a death squad, promoting violence and gender-based abuse, nurturing a culture of impunity, and inciting extrajudicial killings.
The human rights organization KARAPATAN endorses this initiative as part of broader efforts to hold Duterte accountable for violations of human and people’s rights.
This petition gains additional significance in light of Duterte’s recent appointment as one of the legal representatives for his daughter, Vice President Sara Duterte, in the impeachment proceedings against her. (ROSE NOVENARIO)
