The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Region 8 has officially relieved Jail Inspector Eva L. from her post at Tacloban City Jail, effective August 16, 2025.
This development follows mounting pressure from media and advocacy groups demanding accountability for reported abuses against persons deprived of liberty (PDLs), including community journalist Frenchie Mae Cumpio and lay worker Marielle Domequil—both members of the detained Tacloban 5.
The action comes in response to a formal petition filed by the Altermidya Network and allied media organizations, urging an investigation into the jail warden’s conduct.
The petition cited multiple reports of harassment, intimidation, and rights violations inside the facility.
Altermidya lodged an official complaint with the BJMP on July 16. According to the BJMP national headquarters, an internal investigation into the allegations remains ongoing.
Frenchie Mae Cumpio, a known advocate for press freedom and grassroots reporting, has been detained since 2020 under charges widely criticized as politically motivated.
Advocacy groups continue to call for her immediate release and the dismissal of trumped-up charges.
Altermidya and its partners urge the BJMP to ensure transparency in its investigation and to uphold the rights and dignity of all PDLs, especially those targeted for their activism and journalism. (ZIA LUNA)
