Mame Mandiaye Niang, the Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), will take charge of the case against former president Rodrigo Duterte following the temporary leave of ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan.

The ICC’s Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) announced that Deputy Prosecutors Niang and Nazhat Shameem Khan are now leading the office’s operations.

In a statement to GMA News Online, the ICC confirmed that Deputy Prosecutor Niang will oversee the situation in the Philippines and the case against Duterte.

The OTP reiterated its dedication to effectively fulfilling its mandate to provide justice for victims of Rome Statute crimes worldwide.

Khan has stepped down while the United Nations Office of Internal Oversight Services investigates allegations of misconduct against him.

Duterte was arrested on March 11 in the Philippines for crimes against humanity related to extrajudicial killings during his anti-drug campaign and is currently held at Scheveningen Prison in The Hague.

A hearing to confirm the charges is set for September 23, 2025.

He has held multiple roles in various positions at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR), served as a regional representative for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Southern Africa, and acted as a judge in the Appeals Chamber of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and the ICTR.
