On Monday, the women’s organization Gabriela urged the Supreme Court (SC) to take action against lawyer Christian Sia, who is running for a congressional seat in Pasig City, due to his “misogynistic” comments regarding single mothers.
In a letter addressed to Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, Gabriela condemned Sia’s behavior and statements made during his campaign rally on April 3, describing them as indicative of misogyny and sexism.
The letter highlighted specific remarks made by Sia at the event, which Gabriela deemed shocking and unacceptable.
Although Sia has since apologized in response to the backlash, Gabriela argued that this gesture falls short of accountability.
The organization emphasized that the Supreme Court has consistently supported women’s rights and made rulings in favor of women and children who have experienced violence and abuse.
Gabriela asserted that Sia’s conduct, as a member of the legal profession, undermines the Court’s commitment to these principles.
While acknowledging that there are established procedures for filing complaints against lawyers, Gabriela noted that the court has the authority to act on this issue independently.
The group also called on political candidates to honor women’s rights and incorporate these issues into their campaign platforms. Meanwhile, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) has requested Sia to justify why he should not be disqualified due to his inappropriate remarks during the campaign. (ZIA LUNA)
