From hospital hallways to House of Representatives: Health Workers officially launches their PartyList

The Health Workers PartyList convened its National Congress today, September 14, 2024, at the Philippine Heart Center, with participation from hundreds of individuals representing its 11 member chapters and numerous hospital unions.

The congress commenced with a presentation of its organizational timeline and activities, delivered by Dr. Benigno Santi II, the President of the Health Workers PartyList.

“We have come far from when we formed the PartyList. Dozens of relief and medical mission activities we have organized only reaffirmed the need for policy changes in order to ensure adequate health service provision to Filipinos, especially in times of need, ” Dr. Santi said.

On August 22, the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) rejected the petition for the registration of the Health Workers PartyList, citing a technical distinction between a sectoral organization and a sectoral party. The PartyList’s motion for reconsideration submitted to COMELEC is still under review.

Steadfast in its dedication to health professionals and the Filipino populace, the Health Workers PartyList remains focused on garnering support and making preparations for the 2025 elections, all while anticipating a response from the COMELEC.

Dr. Gil Catalan, Secretary-General of Health Workers  PartyList, unveiled the partylist’s 10 nominees. Heralded by Robert Mendoza (midwife), Maristela Abenojar (nurse), and Benigno Santi (radiologist) as its first, second, and third nominees respectively, the other nominees were presented as ordered: Rose Mary Ann Solinao (health worker), Julie Passi (nurse), Grace Aure (dentist), Cyruz Tuppal (nurse), Jet Garcia (nurse), Catherine Joyce Brillantes (general physician).

The Health Workers  PartyList passed a resolution supporting nurse Alyn Andamo and the rest of the Makabayan senatorial candidates in their bid in the Senate.

“In the recent 2025 National Budget deliberations, we have seen the significant role of the senators and representatives not only in crafting policies but also in scrutinizing and allocating budget supposedly for the people’s needs,” Dr. Catalan contextualized.

Therefore, the Health Workers PartyList emphasizes the necessity of presenting a varied array of health workers and professionals, as well as endorsing candidates for the Senate who prioritize the needs of the community in the forthcoming May 2025 elections.

The national congress ended in zealous determination as their winning call resounded: “Tumindig, magsama-sama, makipagkaisa sa malawak na taumbayan. Ikampanya natin ang Health Workers PartyList sa Kongreso, si Nars Alyn Andamo at 9 pang Makabayan sa Senado!” (ZIA LUNA)
