Senate President Francis Escudero is confident that the upcoming impeachment trial will not turn into a circus despite the influx of newly elected senators.
At a Senate press briefing, Escudero said initial election results show five reelectionist senators, four former senators, and three former members of Congress among the winners.
Escudero added that these are veterans experienced in legislation who also know the parliamentary rules, so he expects the process to be orderly.
He added that whoever presides over the trial—especially if he remains at the helm—will ensure the proceedings are peaceful, orderly, and clear to the public.
Escudero declined to predict how each incoming senator will position themselves, warning that any pre-trial analysis could be seen as premature judgment.
He again urged all senators, new and returning, to refrain from commenting on the impeachment complaint until all evidence is properly presented.
In the same briefing, Escudero expressed hope that unity and healing will prevail in the coming weeks as the country reviews the successes and challenges of the recent elections.
Escudero urged newly elected officials to set aside politics and focus on serving all citizens—not just those who voted for them.
According to the Senate President, the election is just one phase of the democratic process
He added that the real test is effective governance and addressing the needs of every Filipino, regardless of political affiliation.
Escudero thanked teachers, Comelec officials, and election workers for ensuring a peaceful and orderly vote, emphasizing that it’s time to end political bickering and start uniting.
He added that elected officials—from senators to councilors—have a responsibility to all their constituents, not just their supporters, but every citizen who relies on their service. (TCSP)
