Duterte to assume opposition if UniTeam picks LP as an ally

AMID President Ferdinand Marcos Jr’s renewed calls for “unity” with other political parties, Sen. Ronald dela Rosa issued a stern warning to the Marcos-led UniTeam against forming an alliance with the Liberal Party and “other non-traditional partners.”

According to dela Rosa, the Dutertes will be forced to assume the role of an opposition if only to ensure political equilibrium in the country in the event that LP joins the administration coalition.

Interestingly, dela Rosa didn’t elaborate further when he mentioned “other non-traditional partners” while underscoring what he described as a potential role of the family in making political history once more.

He also cited the need for an opposition to ensure check and balance, which dela Rosa said is basically LP’s role after its standard bearer, former Vice President Leni Robredo fell short of winning the country’s top elective post.

“No choice. Ano bang mangyayari dyan? Eh wala ng opposition. Nandoon na ‘yung mga yellow, mga pink – kasama na sa Malacañang. Paano mafi-fiscalize ‘yung mga affairs of the state kung walang opposition? At saka ang tao naman ang titingin dyan eh,” dela Rosa said during the Kapihan sa Senado forum on Thursday.

“Ganito yan…kung mag align sila, ano pang purpose bakit sila nag-join forces sa Malacañang? Hindi ba para hadlangan ang Duterte. So kapag ganun – hadlangan ang Duterte – obvious na opposition na ang Duterte nyan kapag ganyan ang sitwasyon,” the retired police general added.

When asked who exactly among the members of the Duterte family would assume the role of opposition bloc leader, dela Rosa candidly pointed at Vice President Sara Duterte as the best choice – “or her father.”

But insofar as forming an opposition bloc is concerned, former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV finds ir rather awkward, even as he hinted at the idea of forming an “Anti-Duterte Unity Ticket” in view of Vice President Sara Duterte’s revelation on the senatorial bid of three immediate family members – the former President, sons Congressman Paolo Duterte and Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte whom she said are dead serious on running altogether for the 2025 senatorial race.
