Science and Technology Secretary Dr. Renato Solidum Jr. said his department would strive to offer bigger opportunities for Filipinos to learn about science, technology, and innovation (STI) for the country’s socio-economic growth and development.
Secretary Solidum delivered his keynote during the opening of two events – the 2024 Science Food Festival and the iFWD PH Summit at the atrium of Lucky Chinatown in Binondo, Manila organized by the Department of Science and Technology National Capital Region (DOST-NCR). The events were made open to the public.
The DOST-NCR launched its campaign for 2024-2028 to reach more audiences and target beneficiaries beyond borders by staging and providing STI-based solutions in different approaches than usual.
For her part, DOST-NCR Regional Director Engr. Romelen T. Tresvalles said that “Science Beyond Borders” is not just a tagline for a campaign, but now the way how DOST-NCR shall approach provision of programs and services to better serve the public, employing futures thinking approaches in planning, STI mainstreaming, and science communication initiatives.
As part of its strategies to communicate science, DOST-NCR stages the Science Food Festival and the Innovations for Filipinos Working Distantly from the Philippines (iFWD PH) Summit until June 1, 2024, all happening at the event venue.
Aside from the campaign launch, this twin event also serves as the platform for the official launch of two innovative products: the Okara Energy Drink, developed by the Modular Multi-Industry Innovation Center (MMIC) of the DOST’s Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI), and Okara Flour, developed by the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
It also featured MOU Signing activities with partners for the implementation of the iFWD PH Program namely PCCI Las Piñas, Global Filipino Movement, Online Microsellers Multipurpose Cooperative, and Department of Migrant Workers.
The 4-day event also hosted bazaars showcasing 21 DOST-NCR assisted micro, small, medium enterprises (MSMEs) and partners.
Additionally, a Science-Based Technical Advisory Roving Clinic (STARC) is stationed at the venue, offering a space where MSMEs and aspiring entrepreneurs can seek business consultations. (ANTONIO)
