NEWLY-installed Senate President Francis Escudero hinted at discussing Charter Change among members of the Senate, even as he claims to be standing firm against the idea of amending the 1987 Constitution.
“It’s not for me to say. I have my own position. We will discuss it, and I have no reason to change my position,” Escudero was quoted as saying to Senate reporters.
Escudero replaced Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri as the Senate President after the latter stepped down for “not following the instructions,” of forces believed to be behind his ouster.
Interestingly, Escudero canceled all hearings pertaining to charter change – at least for now.
“We will not hold any such hearing, outside of Metro Manila or even inside the Senate, but we will formally make our decision as a group and as a Senate with respect to this.”
This comes as Zubiri remains positive that Escudero, who has replaced him as Senate President will stand his ground –“As far as we are concerned, ChaCha is dead.”
“Goodbye, Cha-cha, wala na , it is all canceled. Senator Escudero is anti Cha-cha,” Zubiri noted.
Majority of the members of the upper chamber have stood against ChaCha which they claimed would effectively abolish the Senate, for which the proponents would be able to include amendments on term limits. (ANGEL F. JOSE)
