Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula has cautioned against resorting to “extra-constitutional” solutions to address the country’s political turmoil, stressing that Filipinos must uphold democratic institutions and the rule of law.
In a pastoral message delivered on November 15, Advincula appealed to citizens—including members of the military and police—to resist calls for actions outside the Constitution.
He described the current situation as a “deep moral and spiritual crisis” that requires unity, vigilance, and adherence to lawful processes.
Advincula urged the public to remain calm and avoid being swayed by emotions amid widespread protests over corruption allegations.
He emphasized that loyalty should be directed to the nation and its democratic principles, not to individuals or personal interests. “Our fidelity must be to the country and its democratic values,” he said, warning against shortcuts that could undermine stability.
The Cardinal highlighted that political challenges are not merely governance issues but also moral ones. In earlier statements, he reminded the faithful that public protests and demands for accountability are moral obligations, reflecting the people’s collective conviction to suppress wrongdoing.
He stressed that democracy does not begin and end with elections, but requires constant vigilance to ensure leaders remain accountable.
Advincula’s message comes at a time of heightened political tension, with allegations of corruption and budget irregularities sparking public outrage.
He warned that bypassing constitutional processes could deepen divisions and erode trust in institutions. Instead, he called for open, fair, and lawful investigations to address grievances and restore confidence in governance.
The Catholic Church, through the CBCP and its leaders, has consistently urged Filipinos to seek justice through proper channels.
Advincula’s latest appeal reinforces this stance, reminding both the public and state forces that peace and order can only be preserved when the law is respected.
The Cardinal’s warning underscores the Church’s role as a moral compass during times of political instability.
His call to reject “extra-constitutional” remedies and uphold the rule of law reflects a broader effort to guide Filipinos toward solutions rooted in justice, compassion, and democratic principles. (ZIA LUNA)
