Despite constitutional provisions explicitly forbidding the presence of nukes in the Philippines, the Department of Energy (DOE) announced the creation of a nuclear energy division that would work on plans and policies for the country’s foray into nuclear power generation.

In a statement, the DOE said the creation of the Nuclear Energy Division was approved by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) a couple of weeks back.

According to the energy department, the creation of the Nuclear Energy Division is pursuant to Executive Order 116 and 164 issued in 2022 as well as House Resolution 134 urging the DOE to create an Office of Nuclear Energy with plantilla positions of not less than 10 personnel for the purpose of promoting, formulating, and implementing plans and programs for the utilization of nuclear energy in the country.

The Nuclear Energy Division will be under the Energy Utilization Management Bureau (EIMB) – and reporting directly to Undersecretary Sharon Garin.

Under the Nuclear Energy Division are the Resource Planning, Development, and Evaluation Section and the Resource Utilization and Monitoring Sections. (ANGEL F. JOSE)
