Former Bayan Muna Congressman Carlos Isagani Zarate today denounced the latest impending oil price increases set to take effect on January 21 the third straight since the new year.

This is “a continuous merciless attack on consumers” who are already burdened with multiple price hikes at the start of 2025.

“Wala talagang patawad ang mga kompanya ng langis. Unang buwan pa lang ng taon, puro taas singil na agad. These oil companies are showing their true colors – profit over people,” Zarate said.

The veteran progressive lawmaker noted that the oil price hike comes alongside increases in electricity rates, water rates, LRT fare and SSS contributions. “This is a perfect storm of price increases hitting consumers who haven’t even recovered from holiday expenses,” he emphasized.

According to the Department of Energy, diesel prices may increase by P2.60 to P2.80 per liter, while gasoline prices could rise by P1.60 to P1.80 per liter and kerosene from P2.30-2.50.

“Kala mo naman nalulugi ang mga kumpanya nila na bilyon-bilyon naman ang kinikita. These companies are posting billions in profits while ordinary Filipinos struggle to make ends meet,” Zarate pointed out.

He called for immediate government intervention through the removal of VAT on oil products and electricity. “Dapat talaga ay tanggalin na ang VAT sa langis at kuryente para bumaba ang singil. The government must also fast-track the implementation of oil price unbundling guidelines with proper public consultation. But to address the root cause of these merciless oil price hikes the oil industry must be nationalized and regulated,” he said

“The supposed production cuts in the global market shouldn’t be an excuse for these excessive increases. The government must step in to protect consumers from these predatory practices,” Zarate concluded.#
