Bayan Muna: New Year opens with heartless oil price hikes amid multiple cost increases

Former Bayan Muna Congressman Carlos Isagani Zarate today denounced the impending oil price increases set to take effect on January 7, calling it a “merciless attack on consumers” who are already burdened with multiple price hikes at the start of 2025.

“Wala talagang patawad ang mga kompanya ng langis. Pagbukas pa lang ng taon, taas singil na agad. These oil companies are showing their true colors – profit over people,” Zarate said.

The veteran progressive lawmaker noted that the oil price hike comes alongside increases in electricity rates, water rates, and SSS contributions. “This is a perfect storm of price increases hitting consumers who haven’t even recovered from holiday expenses,” he emphasized.

According to the Department of Energy, diesel prices may increase by P0.75 to P1.00 per liter, while gasoline prices could rise by P0.40 to P0.70 per liter. Some companies like Jetti project even higher increases of P1.20 to P1.40 for diesel.

“Kala mo naman nalulugi ang mga kumpanya nila na bilyon-bilyon naman ang kinikita. These companies are posting billions in profits while ordinary Filipinos struggle to make ends meet,” Zarate pointed out.

He called for immediate government intervention through the removal of VAT on oil products and electricity. “Dapat talaga ay tanggalin na ang VAT sa langis at kuryente para bumaba ang singil. The government must also fast-track the implementation of oil price unbundling guidelines with proper public consultation.”

“The supposed production cuts in the global market shouldn’t be an excuse for these excessive increases. The government must step in to protect consumers from these predatory practices,” Zarate concluded.#
